The Home Department of the "Government of Bengal" was instituted in the year 1843. The Functions of this Department from the very beginning were heterogeneous in character.The outline of the main activities of the Department is as follows:

1. History-The Redressal of the Public grievance has been engaging the attention of the Government some time. Therefore, as per order no. 1838(150)-PAR(AR) dated-23.12.1998 Public Grievance and Assistance Office(formerly known as Petition Cell) was set up on 1st April 1999.
